Team CA Multisport provided a small melee against the opposition this weekend down at the playground at the Triangle Triathlon 2010. As successful as we were, we came up a few ticks short of podiuming- coming in STRONG at 4th place.
It was an early morning, muggy and warm, as Kevin kicked us off in the swim. Battling in the mass wave start of dodging swings and kicks, Kevin edged through the torrent. Mid-swim amist the flurry of strokes, the timing chip (which was securely fastened with a neoprene Velcro strap) was stripped from his ankle. This was costly as he had to return to the scene to give search, only to come up with the strap. Pressuring on through the confusion, he emerged in a very healthy 14:44 split!
His race to the handoff tag was quick and lit the fuse for my attack on the bike. Sprinting past the mount line outside the transition area, I give myself an A+ for my flying mount as I passed 3 cyclists immediately while they struggled to mount their machinery. Having competed in the race the day prior as an individual, I knew exactly what to expect. Like a frenzied shark, I blasted past many, hunting down the other relay participants. In the back stretch I hammered on tucking tight into aero position peaking at a respectable 38mph. Shoes off and coasting in fast I executed a flawless running dismount only to be foiled by some dupe confused and blocking entrance into transition. Forcing through, I chip-tagged Jason at a 49:00 split.
Jason powered off into the distance. To make matters more difficult, the sun decided to show itself to provide a greater heat factor into the mix. Jason’s cheetah-like pace provided him the stride to run down the opponents ahead of him. The course was a treacherous mix of asphalt, gravel and trails with little to no shade. Amist the sweat, showering cups of water and baking sun, the finish chute appeared in the distance and Jason kicked hard. With out-stretched hand for a fly by hi-5 he nailed a 23:00 split.
Victory was ours!! -even if it was a 4th place slot. I would like to thank both Jason and Kevin for the awesome experience, being my 1st relay triathlon; I’m hoping to participate in a few more relays later this yr now Oh and thank you Kevin for being the fish that you are and for volunteering for the lost chip fee. And thanks Jason for sandbagging on the run!
It was great getting out there with my fellow co-workers and showing the public the formidable force that we call Team CA Multisport.
